The Arkansas Department of Health Supports Community Water Fluoridation
When you visit Dr. Matthews, he often tell you what you need to do to protect your teeth in between cleanings and regular check ups. This usually includes brushing, flossing, and eating healthy foods. This dental health plan has plenty of potential for individual success, but what about the population as a whole? What can our community do to improve oral health between visits to the dentist? The Arkansas Department of Health’s answer is water fluoridation.
Fluoridation is the process of increasing the amount of fluoride in the public water supply to the amount proven to be safe, effective and economical in the prevention of tooth decay. It is an inexpensive way to deliver fluoride benefits to the public. For every dollar spent on community water fluoridation, up to $42 is saved in treatment costs for tooth decay. According to the Arkansas Department of Health, fluoridation protects more than 300 million people in more than 40 countries worldwide, 170 million people in the United States alone, with more than 1.7 million people in Arkansas.
